It all began in 1852 when 19 year-old Adam Baker Carlock left his family in Iowa and arrived in California with gold and adventure in mind. He soon decided that offering services to miners was more profitable than mining. So, he operated a packing company until moving to Scott Valley in 1856 where he became a merchant.
First references of Carlock as a banker are that he began retaining gold for the miners in 1858. The industrious Carlock wore many hats in the bustling gold town of Fort Jones. He served as express agent, telegraph operator, postmaster, (and later senator), and investor in many a vital start up business . . . Above all, A. B. was a strong community leader. His enterprising nature led him to incorporate as A. B. Carlock, Banker in 1892. He re-incorporated as Carlock Banking Co. in 1902, then sold the bank in 1910 to George W. Smith who changed the name to Scott Valley Bank in 1911. This name change reflected the impact of the bank as an integral contributor to the region’s growth and development.
In 1982, Scott Valley Bank became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Walnut Creek headquartered Learner Financial Corporation. Soon thereafter, the Bank’s service was extended into other Northern California Counties, the Bay Area, and Southern Oregon.
Scott Valley Bank enjoys its status as California’s oldest independent bank. We believe that a contributing factor to its longevity is the continued practice of providing highly personalized banking services for consumers and businesses.
